Introducing Atura

The range includes protein ingredients derived from chickpea, red lentil, and fava bean, offering formulators greater flexibility when developing next-generation nutrition products.

Each protein delivers its own nutritional and functional characteristics while meeting growing consumer demand for plant-based solutions. Whether developing products for active lifestyles, healthy ageing, weight management, or everyday nutrition, the Atura range provides versatile ingredient options designed for modern food and supplement applications.

Why Protein Matters As We Age

Muscle mass naturally declines with age. Research suggests adults may lose approximately 3% to 8% of muscle mass per decade after the age of 30, with losses accelerating later in life. Maintaining sufficient dietary protein intake, alongside regular physical activity, is widely recognised as an important consideration for healthy ageing.

As demand grows for protein-enriched products that support active and independent lifestyles, plant proteins are becoming an increasingly important part of the nutrition landscape.

Atura Red Lentil

Atura Red Lentil Protein (LP80) combines high protein content with formulation flexibility for a wide range of nutrition applications. Containing more than 80% protein, it delivers a neutral flavour, smooth mouthfeel, and very good dispersibility. Its distinctive light peach colour can provide differentiation in product development, particularly in savoury and specialised nutrition applications. The protein contains 36% essential amino acids and offers an optimal branched-chain amino acid profile. With medium viscosity and excellent stability in processing environments, Atura Red Lentil Protein is well suited to high-protein foods, beverages, soups, snacks, and nutrition products. It provides formulators with a unique pulse protein option that supports both product innovation and consumer demand for plant-based nutrition.

Atura Fava Bean

Atura Fava Bean Protein (FP85) is Atura's highest protein offering, delivering more than 85% protein content alongside exceptional functionality. Developed for protein fortification and enrichment applications, it combines a neutral flavour, smooth mouthfeel, excellent dispersibility, and UHT stability. The ingredient contains 38% essential amino acids and is naturally rich in leucine, an important branched-chain amino acid associated with muscle protein synthesis. Scientific evaluation has demonstrated amino acid uptake comparable to pea protein, supporting its use in advanced nutrition formulations. With low to medium viscosity and strong compatibility across flavour systems, Atura Fava Bean Protein is suitable for beverages, nutritional powders, specialised nutrition, dairy alternatives, and active lifestyle products.

Frequently Asked Questions About Protein

  1. Why is protein important as we age?

Protein plays an important role throughout life, particularly during ageing. Adequate protein intake helps support the maintenance of muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Combined with regular physical activity, sufficient protein intake may help older adults remain active, mobile, and independent for longer.

  1. What is sarcopenia?

Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. It is estimated to affect approximately 10% to 16% of older adults worldwide, with prevalence increasing after the age of 60. Growing awareness of sarcopenia is driving demand for protein-rich foods, beverages, and nutritional supplements that support healthy ageing.

  1. Are plant proteins suitable for healthy ageing products?

Yes. Plant proteins are increasingly used in nutrition products designed for active lifestyles and healthy ageing. Ingredients such as chickpea, red lentil, and fava bean proteins provide formulators with versatile options that align with consumer interest in plant-based nutrition, sustainability, and ingredient diversity.

  1. How much protein do older adults need?

Protein requirements can vary depending on age, activity level, and overall health. Many nutrition experts recognise that older adults may benefit from higher protein intakes than younger adults to help support muscle maintenance. Product developers are therefore increasingly creating protein-enriched foods and supplements targeted at ageing populations.

  1. Why are consumers looking beyond traditional protein sources?

Today's consumers are seeking protein options that deliver nutritional value alongside sustainability and clean label appeal. Plant-based proteins from legumes such as chickpeas, red lentils, and fava beans offer an attractive alternative for manufacturers developing innovative products across healthy ageing, active nutrition, beverages, snacks, and wellness applications.
